how to find a good paint contractor?

Your time is valuable. Why not hire a professional painter for your next project?

Using a professional painting contractor takes the stress out of painting your home. But finding the right one is an important decision that requires careful consideration.

Use the following tips to hire the right professional for any painting project:

Ask Around

The best way to find a quality painting contractor is to get referrals from friends, neighbors, and acquaintances who have had good experiences with painting contractors in your area. You can also get referrals from your local Benjamin Moore store.

Get Estimates from at Least Three Contractors

When you receive contractor estimates, they should fall roughly within the same price range. If estimates differ widely from one another, ask what is not being done or
where corners are being cut.

Interview Each Candidate

Always ask contractors the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Do you have the proper/required licenses? (This varies by state, and some states may not require licensing.)
  • Do you have insurance and bonding? (This helps determine whether your contractor and any hired workers are insured for injury and liability.)
  • Are you a member of any national or local painting contractors’ associations?
  • Do you subcontract your work or perform it yourself?
  • Can you provide references?
  • Do you offer written guarantees of your work?
  • What products do you use?

Be Specific About the Project

It’s a good idea to walk each potential contractor around the areas (indoor or outdoor) to be painted while discussing your needs, and particularly any aspects of the project that could affect the price. Be specific about which surfaces you want to have painted (walls, trims, moldings, ceilings, etc.) and the paint colors and finishes you want used.

Pay Attention to Behavior

As you meet with each contractor, pay attention to the following signs and behaviors:

  • Does the contractor project a sense of professionalism and experience?
  • Is the contractor courteous and business-like?
  • Is the contractor busy? (Good ones usually are.)
  • Does the contractor return phone calls and provide estimates in a timely manner?
  • Is the contractor on time for appointments?

Check References

Be sure to get at least three references from past customers and speak to them directly. If possible, visit references to evaluate the painter’s work in person and to see how well it has held up over time.;jsessionid=sjg8XZRMTJLL7Hlkp6vmQnkLSVqXGt90L2GVQzJdVDV0mlxzQWRm!-515951669!NONE

  1. I loved how specific this advice was. Finding three painting contractors doesn’t seem like it’ll take a lot of work either. Although I think that it’s best if you can look at all your options.

I would like to get my home repainted. I think it would be nice to be able to tell them exactly what I needed. I will be sure to take your advice in making sure they know every detail of what I want done to my home.

  3. I like your idea on considering subcontractors when you are looking for a painting company. I would imagine that you would want to find someone who either does the work themselves or has certified and qualified subcontractors. I’m looking for someone to paint my home so I’ll have to find someone who uses qualified employees.

  4. Thanks for the great article. You mentioned that you should ask friends, neighbors, and acquaintances for recommendations for a good painting service. My brother is planning on painting his kitchen, and wanted it done really well. I’ll suggest that he ask his friends in his neighborhood who they have hired in the past to do their painting.

  5. Walking each potential contractor around the areas to be painted while discussing your needs is excellent advice for making sure you find someone who can handle the job. Being specific about the surfaces, the colors, and the finishes you wish to use will probably help them know how best to handle the job. Making sure you do your research into the painting service and finding out what types of projects they work on and what they specialize in, seems like a great way to find the best contractor for the job.

  6. These are some great tips for finding a good painting contractor. I like how you said to interview in each candidate in person. That, in my opinion, is the best way to know if you can trust a contractor or not.

  7. John Mahoney says:

I liked when you talked about getting estimates from at least three contractors. It makes sense that doing this can help you make sure you have options and find someone of your liking. I would want to find someone that knows their stuff and wants to share their knowledge with their customers.

  8. Hiring a professional painter is a good idea. Although painting isn’t super hard, I can never do it right. I agree that it’s still important to ask around for some referrals, just so you make sure you hire the best contractor you can.

  9. Home maintenance services include painting, carpentry, tiling, and plumbing, all of which keep the fundamental elements of the home in condition. There are many businesses and professionals that can assist with Home maintenance, whether they supply the materials for some DIY maintenance, such as doors, windows, decking, or even bricks and mortar, or whether it’s an experienced and skilled tradesperson, from plumbers to electricians, landscapers, cabinet makers and pavers, that provide clients with a number or repairs and maintenance options and prices. They can also offer advice and quotes over the phone or online.

  10. I love your tips for finding a good painting contractor. It makes sense that you want to be really specific about the project, to see who is comfortable with all the details. I’m just really bad at painting, so as long as I can find a competent painter, I’m happy.
